Lorna Phillips Forde Announces Candidacy for Montgomery County, MD, County Council, District 2
Germantown, MD – Lorna Phillips Forde, a small-business owner & 35-year resident of Germantown, MD today announced that she will run for Montgomery County Council, District 2, in the 2022 election. District 2 includes Barnesville, Beallsville, Boyds, Clarksburg, Darnestown, Dickerson, Germantown, North Potomac and Poolesville.
“As a 35-year resident of Germantown, I have spent years advocating for equitable policies and legislation that aim to provide residents across all walks of life an opportunity to thrive,” Forde said. I raised two daughters here and own a small business, too. It’s important to me that Upcounty residents have representation on the Council that is reflective of our fast growing district’s diversity.”
ABOUT LORNA PHILLIPS FORDE
Forde is committed to advancing social, racial, and economic equity for all. She has worked diligently in a wide array of community organizations creating solutions to meet community needs, including serving on the Board of Directors at the Manna Food Center where she was the former Chair of the Advocacy Task Force, advocating for policy and legislation that improves the quality of and access to food for vulnerable residents. She and fellow board members successfully advocated for the extension of SNAP benefits, which were crucial during the COVID pandemic. Forde is also a strong advocate for sensible gun legislation and recently received Moms Demand Action’s 2022 Gun Sense Candidate Distinction. She possesses extensive experience advocating for equitable policy and legislation for women, including serving as a gubernatorial appointee to the Maryland Commission for Women and former Chair of the Montgomery County Commission for Women.
Forde served as the president of the Montgomery County Alumnae Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., receiving the Montgomery Serves Award, the County's highest honor for group volunteerism, during her tenure. As Delta’s former Social Action Coordinator for the state, she coordinated legislative events attended by local, state and federal elected officials to advocate for many issues. The power of her organization successfully advocated for the elimination of the sale of flavored tobacco products which negatively impact the health and well-being of youth.
Forde received a B.S. degree in Business Administration from Virginia State University, an M.B.A. in Finance from the University of Pittsburgh, and certifications in Contract Management from the Florida Institute of Technology and Contract Law from Harvard University.
